Welcome to Germantown, Nashville!

Fun with the Nashville Sounds at First Tennessee Park, Photo by: Deldevries via Wikipedia

You heard it here first! Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals is opening yet another location in one of Nashville’s most trendy neighborhoods- Germantown! Located North of downtown (and walking distance from the capital building), the Germantown district is brimming with historic appeal and all the charm of what makes Nashville so loveable.

Our 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom vacation homes at Vista Germantown have all the amenities you need for a relaxing and comfortable trip to Music City. With en suite laundry, a living room, and a kitchen, you’ll be able to live like a local with twice as much space for about the same cost as one of the downtown hotels. Relax outside on the community sundeck and take a dip into the salt water pool. Feeling a bit chilly afterward? Sit and watch TV by the outdoor fire pit.

Step outside your condo community and you’ll be walking distance from downtown and other exciting attractions that the Germantown neighborhood has to offer. If you don’t feel like wandering too far from the neighborhood area, take a moment to explore the interesting attractions and restaurants of Germantown:

  1. Nashville Farmer’s Market: Voted the best Farmer’s Market in Nashville, this Germantown spot runs 362 days a year. If you’re the type who adores fresh food (and likes to know where it comes from) this spot is a definite must for your grocery gatherings. Tip: This place is bustling on Saturday, but not so busy on Sunday. (You’re in the Bible belt, after all.)
  2. Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park: This scenic park stands as Nashville’s own “National Mall”-esque tribute to Tennessee. Witness 31 fountains and a wall mural depicting the history of the state. There’s more- a 95 Bell Carillon, a World War 2 Memorial, Court of Three Stars, and a 2,000 seat amphitheater. Worth a visit!
  3. First Tennessee Park: The new home of the the Nashville Sounds baseball team! Catch a game and grab some snacks for an affordable family activity. Awesome views of the city from here, as well.
  4. Peter Nappi: One of Nashville’s most unique luxury product stores. Peter Nappi is an Italian leather company that operates in Germantown. Witness a boutique with incredible ambiance as well as some of the finest leather products you will ever touch. Peter Nappi even has a small concert venue within the store for local musical performances. A true Nashville fashion legend. See their online store here.
  5. Oktoberfest: This might only be in October, but it’s worth checking out when it happens! Germantown overflows with festivities, music, German cultural activites, and BEER!

Germantown is chalk full of incredible restaurants to try. Here’s some of our favorites:

  1. Germantown Cafe: Modern American, German
  2. Mad Platter Restaurant: Modern American
  3. Rolf and Daughters: Modern American, Mediterranean
  4. 5th and Taylor: Modern American
  5. Silo: Southern, Modern American
  6. Monell’s Dining and Catering: Southern, Soul Food
  7. City House: Italian
  8. Butchertown Hall: Traditional American, Gastropubs
  9. Germantown Pub: Modern American, German, Breakfast & Brunch
  10. 312 Pizza Company: Pizza, Sandwiches

Not sure where to stay in Nashville? Stay like a local in a Germantown vacation rental and skip the stuffy hotel experience. Give us a call any time of day at 866-232-3864 and one of our helpful reservation agents can assist you in booking the perfect Nashville condo. We look forward to hosting your next Music City adventure and hope you love the city just as much as we do!

Skip The Crowded Hotel Experience in Seattle

Bringing a crowd to Seattle?

Whether you’re traveling with family, friends, or business partners, we know that our guests love having plenty of room for everyone when you book accommodations with Stay Alfred. Even if it’s just one or two people traveling, our vacation rentals are an upgrade to a hotel experience with twice as much room and home-like comfort for a similar rate. At every Stay Alfred vacation home, you’ll have your own living room, fully-equipped kitchen, and en suite laundry available. Why stuff everyone into a few 300 square foot hotel rooms when you can explore the city while living like a local in one of our one, two, or three bedroom options? Here’s just two of our condo locations available for your next Seattle adventure:

Harbor Steps vacation rental by Stay Alfred

Harbor Steps: You’ve heard of Pike Place, right? Our Harbor Steps vacation rental is perfectly located right in the same iconic neighborhood. Just a five minute stroll down the street and you’ll find the famous fish market, Gum Wall, first EVER Starbucks store, The Great Wheel, and more Seattle legends.

Not only does this property boast an unbelievable 100 Walk Score, but plenty of exciting amenities and options for your stay. At the Harbor Steps, Stay Alfred offers both one and two bedroom choices. Some of our condos even feature a dazzling waterview of Elliott Bay. The Harbor Steps offers plenty of exciting community amenities, including a lap pool, hot tub, sauna, game room, community lounge, yoga studio, and fitness center. Even if you never leave your condo, you will not be at a loss for activities.

Olympus vacation rental by Stay Alfred

Olympus: Need a bit more room? Our Olympus vacation rental location offers both two and three bedroom condos for your guests. At Stay Alfred, we’re all about location, so it’s no surprise that the Olympus also is surrounded by attractions. Just a ten minute walk to the North, you’ll find the iconic Space Needle as well as the Seattle Children’s Museum, Key Arena, and Pacific Science Center. At a 15 minute walking distance, Pike Place isn’t so far away, either. The Olympus is just steps away from the scenic Seattle waterfront, and right across the street is the art lover’s fantasy of Olympic Sculpture Park. Grab a cup of morning coffee and take a walk around the latest sculpture installations as you gaze out at the glittering waters of Elliott Bay.

Inside your vacation rental, you’ll find home-like comforts as well as useful community amenities, including a business center, fitness center, media room, and outdoor BBQ grilling area. City of Seafood: Best Sushi Spots in Seattle

From the famous fish tosses of Pike Place Market to the Ballard locks salmon ladder, Seattle’s distinct seafood culture is part of what makes this city so special. Naturally, Seattle is one of Stay Alfred’s favorite cities to sample sushi. After asking my sushi-obsessed office what restaurants in Seattle were the best, these were the top contenders. Feel free to let us know what sushi restaurants in town you have had the best experience at. Enjoy- and don’t forget to make a reservation!

Maki roll style sushi, Photo by: Suzette via Flickr

Sushi Kashiba: Shiro Kashiba is Seattle’s own master sushi chef. Kashiba, an apprentice to famed world’s best sushi chef Jiro Ono from “Jiro Dreams of Sushi”, has delighted sushi snobs everywhere by opening his latest restaurant in Pike Place in late 2015. Sushi Kashiba might have a high price tag, but it doesn’t disappoint. Incredibly fresh fish is paired with other interesting seafood elements to create sushi as it is supposed to be savored. You’ll be graced with attentive service and helpful presentations on what you are eating. 86 Pine Street #1, (206)441-8844

Shiro’s: Chef Kashiba also opened this 11 seat restaurant in Belltown in 1994. Though Kashiba has since moved on to work at Sushi Kashiba, the excellence of this Spartan-simple yet iconic restaurant still lives on through lead chef Jun Takai. Expect incredibly fresh seafood and traditional Japanese fare at its finest. 2401 2nd Avenue, (206)443-9844

Mashiko Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar: We’re not letting Shiro Kashiba’s restaurants steal all the attention. Mashiko is another high-end sushi spot in town with an enthusiastic fan base and rave reviews. What makes Mashiko special? It is Seattle’s first 100% sustainable sushi restaurant. The chef knows where every single piece of piece of seafood is coming from and prepares it with delicate care. A perfect place for special occasions. 4725 California Avenue SW, (206)935-4339

Japonessa Sushi Cocina: Looking for a more unique sushi experience? Japonessa combines Spanish flavors and flair to sushi without compromising the taste of quality cut fish. Despite the non-traditional sushi preparation methods, Japonessa is a favorite of Seattleites. The sushi isn’t the only fantastic thing here- the sake cocktails will not disappoint. 1400 1st Avenue, (206)971-7979

Momiji: With a serene, Japanese decorated interior and delicious fish cuts, Momiji has become a popular choice for sushi that’s a bit more affordable than some of the more high-end spots in town. With friendly service, a pleasant atmosphere, and a great drink menu, Momiji allows you the full Seattle sushi experience without the sushi-snob vibe. 1522 12th Avenue, (206)457-4068

Tsukushinbo: Don’t forget about this spot just because the name might be a bit difficult to say! If you’re looking for a wide selection of both sushi and other Japanese delights in a friendly atmosphere, this slightly hidden spot in the International District might be the perfect place for you. 515 South Main Street, (206)467-4004

Umi Sake House: This popular, bustling Belltown spot is known for both delectable sushi and a well-loved happy hour. While traditional sushi restaurants are more quiet, serene, and simple, Umi’s large, club-like interior and extended drink menu is perfect for a fun night out. 2230 1st Avenue, (206)374-8717

Hidden Gem!
Wataru: This totally unassuming restaurant hasn’t caught the public eye quite yet in Seattle. Tucked away on the main street in the Ravenna neighborhood, Wataru is truly a small but pleasant surprise. Chef Kotaro Kumita (who apprenticed under Shiro Kashiba, of course) only accepts 6 diners at the bar at a time where you can watch as he single-handedly creates sushi for everyone in the restaurant. The whole restaurant only seats 24. With Chef Kumita being the sole chef in this restaurant, don’t come here expecting a rapid dining experience. The foodies are slowly finding out about this place- make a reservation before you have to fight for one! 2400 NE 65th Street, (206)525-2073

Not sure where to stay in Seattle?
Skip the crowded hotel experience and live like a local in Seattle’s best neighborhoods for a comparable rate. At Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals, we offer the most walkable and safe vacation homes in town. Of course you’re condo will be close by the best sushi spots, as well. Give us a call any time of day at 866-232-3864 and our knowledgeable reservation agents will be more than happy to help you book the perfect Emerald City getaway.

8 Fantastic Eats in San Antonio

We’ve sampled San Antonio and found the best eats in all of Alamo City. Whether you’re looking for something unforgettably gourmet or fantastic yet affordable, we’ve got you covered. If there’s one thing we’ve learned about San Antonio at Stay Alfred, it’s that the incredible culture here definitely shows in the local cuisine!

Delicate gourmet courses served at Mixtli, Photos by Kent Wang via Flickr

HIGH END CHOICES
Bliss: This New American style restaurant truly lives up to its name. With a romantic, twinkling ambience and friendly service, Bliss is a San Antonio favorite for a special date night out. Must try: Oyster sliders or shrimp risotto. 926 South Presa Street

Wildfish Seafood Grille: Wildfish Seafood Grille arguably has the best seafood in San Antonio, and a decent steak (or surf and turf style dish) if seafood isn’t really your thing. Must try: Chilean Sea Bass or the crispy crab cakes. 1834 North Loop 1604 West

Mixtli: Mixtli is the brainchild of two Mexican chefs and one boxcar. Every night, they serve only 12 guests at 7PM sharp. The menu changes every 45 days to reflect the history of a different region of Mexico. Expect very interesting and visually appealing offerings unlike anything you have ever eaten. An unforgettable experience for $95 per person. Must try: Try to get a reservation! 5251 McCullough Avenue

Restaurant Gwendolyn: James Beard Award-Winning chef Michael Sohocki has truly created one of San Antonio’s major dining gems. The concept of Cafe Gwendolyn is zero electricity- the chefs only prepare food in ways that could be done before the year 1850. Expect sustainable, fresh, and organic New American delights. Must try: The menu changes every single night, but you won’t be disappointed. 152 East Pecan Street Suite #100

Mi Tierra is a bit of a tourist trap, but we love it. Photo by: Mathieu Ploude via Wikipedia Commons

MORE AFFORDABLE
Dough Pizzeria: Incredible yet affordable pizza awaits you at Dough Pizzeria Napoletana. Guy Fieri from the Food Network even called it “the real deal”. Must try: Burrata sampler. 6989 Blanco Road

Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia (Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery): Fun fact, this spot was once featured on an opening episode of The Bachelor. It’s an obvious San Antonio tourist hot spot, but maybe that’s why we love it so much. Simply delicious Mexican eats and desserts in a fun, upbeat environment with CRAZY colorful decor. Must try: Deep fried ice cream. 218 Produce Row

Leon Valley Cafe: Reservations recommended. With glowing Yelp reviews (some of the best in the entire city), you’ll be surprised at just how small this loveable cafe is. Friendly service and simply delicious brunch, lunch, and dinner. Must try: Huevos Rancheros OR The Hangover Breakfast. 6526 Bandera Road

Cured: When Chef Steve McHugh was cured from lymphoma cancer in 2013, he opened one of San Antonio’s hottest charcuterie restaurants as a celebration of his victory. Naturally, the restaurant serves a wide variety of meats that are cured in-house from 30 days to 12 months-truly a carnivore’s dream. Don’t miss out on the excellent craft cocktails, as well. Must try: Charcuterie plate. 306 Pearl Parkway Suite #101

Stay Alfred Introduces Express Check-In

At Stay Alfred, we’re constantly turning travel assumptions upside down.

We’re committed to becoming the best and most trusted vacation rental company in the United States, and in order to do that, we are always innovating and finding new ways to better serve the needs and desires of our guests.

For the optimal convenience of our guests, we’re proud to introduce Express Check-In to the world of travel accommodations.

Most hotels offer express check-out where guests can leave the keys behind in their room and then feel free to hit the road. However, Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals is the first vacation home company to offer Express Check-In. Some hotels offer a type of express room entry to guests, but it’s usually part of an exclusive loyalty program and guests still have to receive their keys from the front desk in the hotel lobby. When you stay with Stay Alfred, you’re guaranteed to receive the quickest and most convenient check-in possible no matter how many times you have booked with us. No loyalty program is needed. Even first-time guests can have the VIP experience of a completely independent and hassle-free vacation rental entry.

Almost all of our vacation rental locations have a check-in process that puts hotels to shame. It’s different than any other sort of check-in available in the travel industry right now. It’s faster because it allows you to enter your vacation rental at your own pace instead of waiting for a concierge or standing in line. You won’t have to provide anyone with your driver’s license or credit card. You don’t have to talk to anyone or explain any details about your stay. You don’t even have to pick up your keys from a front desk. After a long day of traveling to your destination, we understand that you just want to check into your room, stretch out, and relax. With Express Check-In, Stay Alfred gives you the freedom to let yourself in. After all, we’re committed to giving you the experience of feeling right at home in your condo.

When you book with Stay Alfred, we’ll send you an email before your stay containing detailed instructions on how to enter your vacation home via Express Check-In. If anything at all is unclear to you, our helpful customer care agents can be reached 24/7 via phone, text, or email to provide you with any sort of assistance you might need. It’s that simple.

Stay Alfred’s introduction of Express Check-In is just one example of how we’re leading the industry by adopting new technologies and challenging outdated assumptions about how travel should be.

If you’re looking to book accommodations with the greatest possible amount of privacy, convenience, and value, Stay Alfred would love to help you find the perfect vacation rental. We always say, “Why cram your friends and family into a 300 square foot hotel room when you can book a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment for a comparable rate?” Give us a call any time of day at 866-232-3864 to speak to one of our helpful reservation agents.

Philadelphia also is home to a thriving modern arts scene, as well. With spring in the air and summer just around the corner, why not take a day to enjoy an art walk or gallery showing? Old Town Philadelphia hosts the world’s largest collection of outdoor public art AND offers a number of unique tours to showcase it. Hundreds of eclectic murals span the landmarks of Old Town. Philadelphia Museum of Art, photo by Krscal via Wikipedia

Philadelphia Museum of Art: With Greek-revival architecture based off of the Parthenon, it’s fitting that this museum houses an impressive collection of historical masterpieces. As the 3rd largest art museum in the USA, Philly’s art museum boasts a number of enviable paintings including Claude Monet’s iconic 1899 “Japanese Bridge and Water Lilies”. Insider tip: The first Sunday of every month and Wednesdays after 5PM are “pay as you wish” for admission. Otherwise, $20 admission during other times.

The Barnes Foundation, Photo by Smallbones via Wikipedia

The Barnes Foundation: At this uniquely crafted museum, you’ll witness the stunning art collection of the eccentric late Dr. Albert Barnes. New Years Travel Resolutions You Can Actually Keep

New Years TravelKeeping your New Year’s resolutions is tough. Whether it’s to exercise more, spend less, or finally take that big trip you’ve been dreaming about, it seems we’re all guilty of making big plans that never seem to pan out. While we can’t really help with the money and exercise stuff, we’ve got some great tips from top travel writers to help you make this year different and experience the vacation of a lifetime!

1. Use all of your vacation time.

“This is step one. Research firm Harris Interactive reports that only 51 percent of U.S. employees use their eligible paid vacation time and paid time off. What’s worse, 61 percent of Americans who do take a holiday still work while they’re away. This martyrdom has got to stop. Time off is essential to a healthy work-life balance, and most rational people agree that seeing the world and meeting people unlike yourself makes you a more interesting and compassionate person. Point being: If you’re an underling at your company, take your vacation time to set boundaries. If you’re the boss, lead by example. Use your days and don’t harangue your employees with inquiries from the beach in Naxos—unless, of course, it’s to ask for food recommendations.” Ashlea Halper, Conde Nast Traveler

2. Get out of your comfort zone

“Step out of your comfort zone. You are getting older. The older you get, the more precious is your time and the greater the need to acquire new experiences. So, think of the place where you feel most comfortable, and do the opposite. If your “happy place” is, say, a waterside taverna on a Greek island, get yourself off to the Iranian desert (or rather, get a good adventure tour operator to get you there). Conversely, if you are most content kayaking off Vancouver Island or hiking New Zealand’s South Island, try a package in Benidorm.” Simon Calder, Independent

3. Travel Alone

“Apologies to my dear boyfriend, who was a trooper throughout this last year of adventuring, but I regret not splitting off to do a little solo traveling. Although we got along marvelously, there’s just something about entering a strange land alone that compels you to interact more intensely with it, and to connect more with others—a taxi driver, a bartender, a stranger in the ticket line–in a way you otherwise might not because you’d just talk to your travel companion instead. Traveling with others, especially a significant other, is easier and more comfortable, but traveling alone is validating and confidence-building. Even if you don’t want to take an entire vacation by yourself, consider separating from your partner just for a day. You do what you want, they do what they want, everyone is happy.” Ashlea Halper, Conde Nast Traveler

4. Think for yourself

“It’s okay to not like ancient temples. Or palaces. Or history museums. Just because it’s in the guidebooks or on someone else’s bucket list doesn’t mean it should be on yours. Traveling nonstop for a year taught us this, as we sometimes found ourselves trudging through an itinerary of someone else’s making. We didn’t care about what we were seeing; we were just going through the motions. That’s lame. If you want to blow through the Prado in half an hour and spend 45 minutes in the gift shop, that’s your prerogative. If you’re an obsessive bibliophile who’d rather spend her time combing the aisles of Siem Reap’s independent bookstores than getting sweaty at Angkor Wat, so be it. It’s your trip. If you’re not having fun, what’s the point?” Ashlea Halper, Conde Nast Traveler

5. Explore Your Own City

“No one is a tourist at home, so it’s common — and somewhat embarrassing — to have major, must-see sites in your own city that you have never actually set your eyes on. The next time a friend or family member comes to town, have yourself a tourist day and keep your secret safe by doubling as an educational host.

Once the mainstream attractions are out of the way, head off the beaten path for urban hidden gems. From an outdoor bike racing track in New York City to an abandoned Nazi camp in Los Angeles and a Technicolor church in Washington, D.C.’s arts district, reference Thrillist for city lists of creative things to do that you didn’t even know existed.” Jackie Strause, Yahoo Travel

6. Unplug

Leave your phone at home. In today’s day and age, everyone is so reliant on mobile and technological devices that a weeklong rejuvenating spa retreat might not be enough relaxation to steer you back to center. Digital detoxes” are leading the growing unplugging trend by stripping participants from any connection to the outside world, and that includes social media. When you quietly camp in Big Sur, watch real birds chirp in Chile and graduate from a Stress Release & Burnout class in Thailand, that vibrating urgency of your smartphone will be a distant need. Packing 101: Organization

Travel Suitcase

Get Organized!

Hopefully you saw our earlier post on how to decide what you should bring when traveling. If not, go check it out; packing truly is a two part process. Even if you’ve followed all the tips on making smart choices about what goes into your suitcase, just tossing stuff in willy-nilly may force you into a bigger bag. You’re going to have to organize to minimize wasted space and keep the number of bags you have to tote down.

Roll your clothes. There are many benefits to rolling over folding. It minimizes wrinkling and allows you to fit items into small, awkward spaces. (If you have a rolling bag, you’re probably familiar with the trough the handle creates in the storage space.) Also, by putting your rolled clothes in first, you create a flat surface for storing other things like shoes, your toiletry bag, and maybe even a book.

Fold items together. The main benefit of this method is minimizing wrinkling. Basically, lay two or three similar garments on top of one another and fold like you normally would. The stacking translates to thicker folds and fewer creases in your clothing. I’ve never tried this method, but it seems like it would be useful for larger items that might be difficult to roll.

Bundle your clothes. This method involves folding (or bundling) your clothes around a core. Stack your clothes in the base of your suitcase, smoothing our wrinkles as you go. You’ll want to put the items most prone to wrinkling (soft fabrics like cotton) on the outside/bottom of the stack. Like folding multiple items together, the outside of the bundle will not have sharp folds and will be less likely to wrinkle. Once your clothes are stacked, place a “core” such as your toiletry bag or a bunch of socks and underwear on the center of the stack. Then fold each item one-by-one around the core. You will end up with a self-contained bundle with fits perfectly in your suitcase.

Buy into a system. If planning and organization just isn’t your thing, there are plenty of companies out there that have already done most of the work for you. My favorite is the Eagle Creek Pack-It System. From shirt folders to toiletry kits to underwear cubes, they’ve designed an organizer for every item you might need. They even have compression bags that don’t require a vacuum. Another benefit of utilizing a packing system like this is that it can actually help you remember what you need to pack. It better to find an empty garment bag at home than to get to your destination and realize you forgot your dressy clothes.

With a little practice, these tips can become second nature and packing will be pain free. Heck, you may even start to enjoy it. Next thing you know, you’ll be jet-setting every weekend. Check out Stay Alfred’s urban vacation rental offerings for a little inspiration.

Meet the Amigos

Look out for the yellow shirts and straw hats

Have you ever visited an unfamiliar city with high hopes of visiting all the famous sights you heard so much about, only to find yourself wandering around aimlessly, completely lost? Your GPS is useless and you can’t find a single soul to give you directions. Even worse, you find yourself in a part of town that could only be described as “unsavory.” Not the way you planned to spend your vacation.

Luckily, if you happen to be visiting downtown San Antonio you can rest assured that there are plenty of friendly folks looking out for you. Meet the Amigos. Easily recognizable in their canary yellow shirts and straw hats, the Amigos are an integral part of the Downtown Public Improvement District created in 2000.

Need directions to the Alamo? Trying to find the River Walk? Want to know which bus will take you to Midtown? The Ambassador Amigos are ready to help; on average they assist over a million people a year. They possess an extensive amount of insider knowledge about downtown and San Antonio in general and serve as information guides, safety escorts, and are even qualified to provide first aid assistance if necessary. The Ambassador Amigos can be readily found in high-pedestrian traffic areas and strategic locations throughout the Downtown District.

While the Ambassadors serve as the public face of downtown San Antonio, the Maintenance Amigos are dutifully working in the background, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. They are tasked with the general upkeep of the District: picking up litter, scrubbing graffiti, pulling weeds, and performing the thankless but necessary jobs that keep downtown looking great. In a given year, they will pick up almost 700 tons of trash, remove 12,000 graffiti tags and 130,000 gum spots, and power wash 31 million square feet of sidewalk. So if you happen to run into a Maintenance Amigo during your visit, be sure to let them know they’re doing a wonderful job!

Have you noticed all the beautiful plants and flowers downtown? Thank the Streetscape Amigos. Taking a cue from the River Walk, the District has added over 600 planters on light poles, stair rails, and large planters throughout downtown’s public right-of ways. The Streetscape Amigos provide the planters and materials that soften downtown and enhance the pedestrian experience for the area’s many workers, residents, and visitors. They are also in charge of maintaining these improvements, which means watering, fertilizing, and replacing seasonal vegetation as necessary. In 2013 alone, the Streetscape Amigos planted 2016 bougainvilleas, 3360 pansies, and 3360 petunias, with plans to expand the scope of the program every year.

So the next you find yourself downtown, keep an eye out for the friendly people in the yellow shirts, even if it’s just to say “hi.” They’re here to help and they’re great at their jobs. After all, they’re not called the Amigos for nothing!

Staying Healthy While You Travel

Eat Right:

One of the best parts of traveling is getting to try a new city’s delicious food, but that often means eating out and consuming a lot of calorie-rich meals. When you eat healthier, you feel better (and you’ll be able to fit into your jeans when you get home).

  • Stay somewhere that has a kitchen. Cooking for yourself lets you choose the right foods and control your portions. It’s also an excellent way to save some money.
  • If you’re going to prepare your own meals, look for a local farmers’ market and pick up some healthy fruits and vegetables. Last year there were over 8,000 farmers in the US, so the odds are pretty good you can find one.
  • Pack some protein-rich snacks like nuts or beef jerky that you can take with you while traveling. The food in airports is notoriously unhealthy and the extra protein will satisfy those hunger cravings, making it easier to avoid temptation.
  • One great trick from Jennifer Cohen at Forbes: if you’re stuck in a hotel room without a kitchen, use the coffee maker in your room to make healthy breakfasts like oatmeal.

Stay Active:

Traveling often means long hours of immobility: sitting at an airport, sitting in a plane, sitting in a car. Here are a few basic tips for staying active on the road.

  • Make use of the facilities. Every hotel will have a fitness center, even if it’s just a NordicTrack in a storage closet. Swim some laps if the pool is big enough or just tread water if it’s not (you’ll burn upwards of 200 calories in 15 minutes).
  • You can also exercise in your room if there is enough space. Pack a jump rope or resistance band. These are easy to use and, most importantly for traveling, lightweight. And don’t forget about yoga.
  • Walk to as many places as possible. If your destination is a mile away or less, try to walk there. Take walking tours of the city. Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Jogging is also a great way to see the city and get some exercise at the same time.
  • Just do it. Obviously you can’t stick to your usual workout routine while you travel, but that doesn’t mean you need to forgo it completely. Even if you squeeze in just 15-20 minutes a day, its certainly better than nothing. Try waking up a half hour earlier than you need and work out before you start your day. That extra bit of activity will make all the difference.

Rest Up:
The best way to mitigate the negative effects of stress is to get get plenty of rest. Your body and mind need time to recharge for you to feel your best. Experts say you need 7-8 hours of sleep a night for optimal performance. If you have trouble falling asleep in a strange environment, try using a sleep mask. Taking time during the day to do some simple meditation exercises can also do wonders for your state of mind.

5 Reasons NOT to Choose Stay Alfred

Vacation Rentals are not for everyone. We get it. Change is scary. Why try something new when the same old thing works out pretty well (usually)? It’s understandable that some travelers don’t want to take the risk and would prefer the typical hotel experience. After all, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it, right? Take a look at the list below to see if you’re the type of person who should just skip the vacation rental option:

You like room service: If you’re someone who does not want to cook your own meals while traveling and instead prefers to enjoy your food in the comfort of your own bed, you should stay in a hotel. Stay Alfred does not offer room service (although you can always order a pizza and there’s several grocery delivery services we’re happy to recommend).

You require daily housekeeping: We find that our guest generally like having the added privacy of not having a stranger poke around their living space when they’re not around. But if you like having new towels dropped off every day and need someone to make the bed for you, a hotel is probably the right move.

Don’t be afraid of technology

You’re scared of heights and/or elevators: Most of our vacation rentals are on the upper levels of high rise buildings, with lots of windows, expansive views, and even balconies. Not a good choice for acrophobes.

You hate downtown: All of our properties are located in the heart of downtown. If you don’t enjoy the hustle and bustle of a major metropolitan area, then Stay Alfred might not be for you.

You don’t trust technology: If you’re reading this blog post, it’s probably reasonable to assume you’re not a complete Luddite, but many people still prefer to do things the old fashioned way. Stay Alfred does all of our business online, accepts payment by credit card, and we even send you our free smartphone app with your arrival instructions. We might actually be robots ( ok, not really).

What Makes a Stay Alfred Vacation Rental Different From a Hotel?

The secret is officially out: more and more people are choosing to stay in vacation rentals instead of the boring, cookie-cutter hotels that travelers have been accustomed to. Whether you’re looking for more space to stretch your legs or an amazing location in the heart of downtown, vacation rentals are proving themselves to be the first choice for discerning guests. In an ever more crowded marketplace, we’re taking the vacation rental industry to the next level. Here are five differences between a Stay Alfred Vacation Rental and the typical hotel:

5. Space: The average hotel room in the U.S. is 325 square feet. Now consider that that most Stay Alfred rentals are over 1000 square feet. With over three times the space, you’re guaranteed to have plenty of room for everyone to be comfortable.

4. Privacy: Our rentals always have separate bedrooms, making Stay Alfred the perfect choice for families, groups of friends, and even complete strangers. We also have our units professionally cleaned between guests so you never have to worry about some housekeeper barging in on you.

3. Independence: Stay Alfred’s unique system puts the check-in process in your hands. You can come and go as you please without having to wait in line or pay extra for someone to park your car or carry your bags. All of our rentals also have a full kitchen so no more bland continental breakfasts or expensive room service.

2. Location: We scout out the best downtown locations in every city which means as a Stay Alfred guest you know you’ll be in the middle of the action, not stuck out by the airport or surrounded by tourist traps. Being right downtown lets you walk to local restaurants, markets, and much more without the hassle of driving in an unfamiliar city. There is no better way to have an authentic travel experience!

1. Value: The number one reason for choosing a vacation rental over a hotel is the unbelievable value you’ll receive. When you combine everything we’ve just mentioned with the fact that our rentals are usually in the same price range as a typical hotel room, it’s clear that Stay Alfred offers the best way to make the most of your vacation dollar.

For more information and tips on how to stay smart and stay together, visit the Stay Alfred website or download the Stay Alfred mobile app. We’ve also put together this handy packing list specifically for vacation rentals. Celebrate Halloween Like a Local in 6 Stay Alfred Cities

Halloween with Stay Alfred

In case you haven’t noticed, it’s that time of year again: Jack-o-lanterns, fake spiderwebs, plastic bats hanging from the trees (along with the occasional roll of toilet paper). We’re all familiar with the trappings of Halloween but if you happen to be from out of town, it can be confusing when you want to party like a local. Luckily, we have the inside scoop when it comes to best celebrations and events, no matter which city you’re going to be in on All Hallow’s Eve!

New Orleans
There is no city that celebrates Halloween as enthusiastically as New Orleans. With its famous cemeteries, voodoo rituals, and long history of ghosts and spirits, the city practically oozes scary. It should be no surprise that its residents embrace New Orleans’ intrinsic spookiness and party with a gusto usually reserved for their other favorite holiday: Mardi Gras. Crowds will flock to Bourbon and Frenchmen for street parties and parades, so don your best costume and join in the festivities. Cate Root from The Times-Picayune has a great breakdown of all the major happenings.

Nashville
Nashville loves to party no matter what the occasion and Halloween is no exception. Any club you hit is almost guaranteed to be having a costume party or themed event of some kind. To see the cream of the crop, head to Play Nashville for their Freak Show contest with $5000 in prizes. Next door, Tribe Nashville is having a tribute to Alfred Hitchcock that’s sure to be a scream. Looking for some real excitement? You will definitely want to try the Demons on Demonbreun Hill, a combination pub crawl and zombie paintball shoot.

Boston
Costume contests, pub crawls, haunted mansions, and graveyard tours are just a few of the exciting Halloween events you can find in Boston. Before you head out for the night’s festivities be sure to stop at Dorothy’s Boutique in Back Bay, the biggest adult costume shop in Boston, to pick up some cool accessories. If you happen to have a bike (and more importantly a costume you can ride in), the Halloween Bike Ride draws hundreds of participants for a casual 10-12 mile ride through the city, starting at Copley Square.

Denver
Besides the typically nightclub craziness, Denver also has a lot of great family-friendly Halloween attractions. The Denver Zoo puts on their annual Boo at the Zoo event with over 25 trick-or-treat stations and other kid-centric activities, all free with normal zoo admission. The Haunted Field of Screams in Thornton is Colorado’s largest Halloween attraction with over 35 acres of “haunted” cornfields. For more grown up activities, ColoWeen at the City Hall Event Center is the most anticipated costume party of the year.

Seattle
Halloween in Seattle usually means one thing: putting on your sexiest costume and dancing until the break of dawn. FreakNight is the main event with big-name DJs, but if you don’t feel like spending a couple hundred dollars for the 2-day pass, there are plenty of other dance parties where you’ll have just as much fun like Pulse at the EMP Museum. Dancing not your thing? Try the Crawl-O-Ween pub crawl and see some of downtown’s hottest bars. Or if you’re feeling extra adventurous, Citizen Zero is a zombie-themed urban hide and seek game on a massive scale.

Portland
Nothing cool ever happens in Portland. You might as well just stay inside and hand out candy to the trick-or treaters. Ok just kidding, you can find the usual mix of costume contests, dance parties, pub crawls, and zombie-themed everything. Jamie Hale of the Oregonian has already put together his procrastinator’s guide to Halloween in Portland, so we’ll just skip reinventing the wheel on this one.

Is That Vacation Rental a Scam?

Is that vacation rental a scam?

As the vacation rental industry moves online, scam artists are targeting both travelers and hosts with a variety of frauds. Cyber-criminals are experts at exploiting communities that rely on trust and a personal connection, and they are finding that vacation rentals are currently a great target for several reasons:

  • the standard practice in the vacation rental industry is for travelers to pay large amounts of money for vacation rentals, long before the stay and sight unseen;
  • not everyone understands or uses safe and secure payment methods;
  • many people conduct their business in email accounts from email providers that have been repeatedly compromised.

There are many ways that these scammers disguise their frauds, but they are basically after two things: your money and your online identity (which they can use to steal your or someone else’s money). Scams targeting travelers are usually fairly straightforward. A scam artist will create a fake vacation rental listing-usually on Craigslist or another unverified platform-and attempt to trick a potential guest into sending payment for a rental they don’t actually own. Many times these fake ads will steal pictures and information from a legitimate listing without the owner’s knowledge, making the scam difficult to detect at first glance. Victims of this scam may end up on the doorstep of the property only to find their reservation never existed, turning the dream vacation into a nightmare.

Scam artists also frequently target property-owners themselves in an attempt to gain access to their email account (from which to set up a fake listing) or with the common “over-payment” scheme. This scheme is nothing new (remember the Nigerian princes?) and involves the scammer sending a fake check far over the amount of the rental with a request that the excess money be wired back, usually to a 3rd party.

In responding to inquiries there are several red flags that rental owners should be vigilant in identifying:

  • Poor grammar and punctuation
  • Originating from an international location
  • Discrepancies between the actual property and what they are inquiring about.
  • Unspecified dates

A major tactic of scammers is to create a sense of urgency in which their target makes a poor decision with good intentions. For travelers this can mean claiming that the desired property has many interested parties and you need to act now to reserve your stay! When targeting owners with the over-payment scam, the criminals often claim to need the money right away and may even become aggressive and threaten legal action.

Here are some useful tips to avoid becoming a victim of one of these scams:

  1. Use a secure form of payment: be wary of anyone that requests payment by money order or cashier’s check and never send money by wire transfer. Paying by credit card offers the best protection against fraud. Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals only accepts payment by credit card.
  2. Use a trusted website: companies like VRBO, HomeAway, FlipKey, and TripAdvisor go through great effort to verify their listings and they offer credit card payment as well as additional rental protection. Always be wary when using Craigslist and avoid unverified sites completely.
  3. Be vigilant: never hesitate to ask questions or request further verification if you have doubts about someone’s legitimacy. Any reputable property owner will be happy to make the extra effort to earn your trust and scammers rarely continue their ruse when challenged.
  4. Use common sense: remember the adage “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.” Beware of properties listed far below the price of comparable rentals or that show photos and amenities that just seem fake. Common sense may be your best tool in avoiding a potential scam.

The Ultimate Vacation Rental Packing List: 18 Items Renters Forget

The Ultimate Vacation Rental Packing List

If you’re considering booking a vacation rental next time you travel, you might have some questions about how vacation rentals differ from hotels. As the industry grows with newer and more convenient ways to book, thousands of travelers are trying a vacation rental for the first time. They realize that staying in a vacation rental means they can stay together and that vacation rentals are the perfect venue for celebration vacations.

But what should a first timer expect? Stay Alfred has prepared the ultimate vacation rental packing list to help you understand the difference between packing for a trip to a hotel and packing for a stay in a vacation rental-including the 18 items even seasoned vacation renters might forget!

For your Rental Home

  1. All-Purpose Cleaner and Sponges*: Unlike a hotel, a vacation rental is not cleaned every day. Having a little cleaner handy can help you take care of little spills and messes as they come up.
  2. Aluminum Foil: One of the chief benefits of a vacation rental is access to full kitchen facilities. Take full advantage of your cooking options with foil, wax paper or static wrap*.
  3. Baby Equipment**: Most vacation rental companies do not provide cribs or playpens.
  4. Bath Soap and Shampoo*: Some vacation rentals provide travel-sizes of some toiletries, but most cannot provide extra.
  5. Coffee, Filters, Cream and Sugar: Take advantage of the coffee maker provided in some vacation rentals with your favorite grind.
  6. Dish Towels and Dishcloths*: Although most vacation rentals provide one or two, you may want more for longer stays.
  7. Dishwasher Detergent*: Some vacation rentals provide a set of dishware and cutlery, but travelers can go through it quickly. Detergent lets your have fresh utensils at every meal.
  8. Garbage Bags*: Although most vacation rentals provide one or two, you may want more for longer stays.
  9. Groceries and Condiments: One of the biggest sources of cost savings with vacation rentals is the ability to avoid eating out every night. You’ll have access to a full-sized refrigerator, freezer, and cabinets; so pack the kinds of food you and your family love to eat.
  10. Laundry Detergent*: Most vacation rentals provide access to laundry facilities. If you plan do laundry while you travel, you can pack fewer clothes and towels.
  11. Napkins: Most vacation rentals do not provide napkins.
  12. Paper Plates: Some vacation rentals provide a set of dishware and cutlery, but travelers can go through it quickly-especially when they use plates to prepare or serve food. Paper plates cut down on the number of times you’ll run the dishwasher.
  13. Paper Towels*: Although most vacation rentals provide one or two spare rolls, you may want to bring extras.
  14. Salt & Pepper*: Some vacation rentals provide condiments, but it’s best to presume they won’t.
  15. Sheets and Towels*: Read your rental agreement carefully to find out what linens are provided. Many vacation rentals provide no linens at all, and most cannot accommodate requests for extras.
  16. Toilet Paper * and Facial Tissue: Although most vacation rentals provide two or three rolls, this is one supply that is too easy to forget.
  17. Toys and Games: Many vacation renters travel with their families. Because rentals are more comfortable than hotel rooms, they often find themselves spending more time together in the unit. Bring favorite games and toys to enjoy together.
  18. Ziplock Bags*: These are seldom provided by vacation rentals, but they have a dozen uses for a traveler.

The above items set this packing list apart from most other lists available. The remainder of the items are standard fare to an experienced traveler, but they may comprise a welcome reminder in the sometimes frantic days leading up to your departure.
