Skip The Crowded Hotel Experience in Seattle

Bringing a crowd to Seattle?

Whether you’re traveling with family, friends, or business partners, we know that our guests love having plenty of room for everyone when you book accommodations with Stay Alfred. Even if it’s just one or two people traveling, our vacation rentals are an upgrade to a hotel experience with twice as much room and home-like comfort for a similar rate. At every Stay Alfred vacation home, you’ll have your own living room, fully-equipped kitchen, and en suite laundry available. Why stuff everyone into a few 300 square foot hotel rooms when you can explore the city while living like a local in one of our one, two, or three bedroom options? Here’s just two of our condo locations available for your next Seattle adventure:

Harbor Steps vacation rental by Stay Alfred

Harbor Steps: You’ve heard of Pike Place, right? Our Harbor Steps vacation rental is perfectly located right in the same iconic neighborhood. Just a five minute stroll down the street and you’ll find the famous fish market, Gum Wall, first EVER Starbucks store, The Great Wheel, and more Seattle legends.

Not only does this property boast an unbelievable 100 Walk Score, but plenty of exciting amenities and options for your stay. At the Harbor Steps, Stay Alfred offers both one and two bedroom choices. Some of our condos even feature a dazzling waterview of Elliott Bay. The Harbor Steps offers plenty of exciting community amenities, including a lap pool, hot tub, sauna, game room, community lounge, yoga studio, and fitness center. Even if you never leave your condo, you will not be at a loss for activities.

Olympus vacation rental by Stay Alfred

Olympus: Need a bit more room? Our Olympus vacation rental location offers both two and three bedroom condos for your guests. At Stay Alfred, we’re all about location, so it’s no surprise that the Olympus also is surrounded by attractions. Just a ten minute walk to the North, you’ll find the iconic Space Needle as well as the Seattle Children’s Museum, Key Arena, and Pacific Science Center. At a 15 minute walking distance, Pike Place isn’t so far away, either. The Olympus is just steps away from the scenic Seattle waterfront, and right across the street is the art lover’s fantasy of Olympic Sculpture Park. Grab a cup of morning coffee and take a walk around the latest sculpture installations as you gaze out at the glittering waters of Elliott Bay.

Inside your vacation rental, you’ll find home-like comforts as well as useful community amenities, including a business center, fitness center, media room, and outdoor BBQ grilling area. With city views surrounding you, you’ll feel much more like a local than a tourist. Don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone.

City of Seafood: Best Sushi Spots in Seattle

From the famous fish tosses of Pike Place Market to the Ballard locks salmon ladder, Seattle’s distinct seafood culture is part of what makes this city so special. Naturally, Seattle is one of Stay Alfred’s favorite cities to sample sushi. After asking my sushi-obsessed office what restaurants in Seattle were the best, these were the top contenders. Feel free to let us know what sushi restaurants in town you have had the best experience at. Enjoy- and don’t forget to make a reservation!

Maki roll style sushi, Photo by: Suzette via Flickr

Sushi Kashiba: Shiro Kashiba is Seattle’s own master sushi chef. Kashiba, an apprentice to famed world’s best sushi chef Jiro Ono from “Jiro Dreams of Sushi”, has delighted sushi snobs everywhere by opening his latest restaurant in Pike Place in late 2015. Sushi Kashiba might have a high price tag, but it doesn’t disappoint. Incredibly fresh fish is paired with other interesting seafood elements to create sushi as it is supposed to be savored. You’ll be graced with attentive service and helpful presentations on what you are eating. 86 Pine Street #1, (206)441-8844

Shiro’s: Chef Kashiba also opened this 11 seat restaurant in Belltown in 1994. Though Kashiba has since moved on to work at Sushi Kashiba, the excellence of this Spartan-simple yet iconic restaurant still lives on through lead chef Jun Takai. Expect incredibly fresh seafood and traditional Japanese fare at its finest. 2401 2nd Avenue, (206)443-9844

Mashiko Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar: We’re not letting Shiro Kashiba’s restaurants steal all the attention. Mashiko is another high-end sushi spot in town with an enthusiastic fan base and rave reviews. What makes Mashiko special? It is Seattle’s first 100% sustainable sushi restaurant. The chef knows where every single piece of piece of seafood is coming from and prepares it with delicate care. A perfect place for special occasions. 4725 California Avenue SW, (206)935-4339

Japonessa Sushi Cocina: Looking for a more unique sushi experience? Japonessa combines Spanish flavors and flair to sushi without compromising the taste of quality cut fish. Despite the non-traditional sushi preparation methods, Japonessa is a favorite of Seattleites. The sushi isn’t the only fantastic thing here- the sake cocktails will not disappoint. 1400 1st Avenue, (206)971-7979

Momiji: With a serene, Japanese decorated interior and delicious fish cuts, Momiji has become a popular choice for sushi that’s a bit more affordable than some of the more high-end spots in town. With friendly service, a pleasant atmosphere, and a great drink menu, Momiji allows you the full Seattle sushi experience without the sushi-snob vibe. 1522 12th Avenue, (206)457-4068

Tsukushinbo: Don’t forget about this spot just because the name might be a bit difficult to say! If you’re looking for a wide selection of both sushi and other Japanese delights in a friendly atmosphere, this slightly hidden spot in the International District might be the perfect place for you. 515 South Main Street, (206)467-4004

Umi Sake House: This popular, bustling Belltown spot is known for both delectable sushi and a well-loved happy hour. While traditional sushi restaurants are more quiet, serene, and simple, Umi’s large, club-like interior and extended drink menu is perfect for a fun night out. 2230 1st Avenue, (206)374-8717

Hidden Gem!
Wataru: This totally unassuming restaurant hasn’t caught the public eye quite yet in Seattle. Tucked away on the main street in the Ravenna neighborhood, Wataru is truly a small but pleasant surprise. Chef Kotaro Kumita (who apprenticed under Shiro Kashiba, of course) only accepts 6 diners at the bar at a time where you can watch as he single-handedly creates sushi for everyone in the restaurant. The whole restaurant only seats 24. With Chef Kumita being the sole chef in this restaurant, don’t come here expecting a rapid dining experience. The foodies are slowly finding out about this place- make a reservation before you have to fight for one! 2400 NE 65th Street, (206)525-2073

Not sure where to stay in Seattle?
Skip the crowded hotel experience and live like a local in Seattle’s best neighborhoods for a comparable rate. At Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals, we offer the most walkable and safe vacation homes in town. Of course you’re condo will be close by the best sushi spots, as well. Give us a call any time of day at 866-232-3864 and our knowledgeable reservation agents will be more than happy to help you book the perfect Emerald City getaway.

Still need a place to stay for San Diego Comic Con?

Photo by: Gage Skidmore via Flickr

Prepare yourselves- San Diego Comic Con is fast approaching and ready to take over the whole city with fandom, costumes, and other comic-related madness. Do you have your accommodations booked?

Have no fear. At this time, Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals has a number of 2 bedroom apartment rentals available for your Comic-Con adventure. Why stuff your family or group of friends into a 300-square foot overpriced hotel when you can live like a local with twice the amount of space for a comparable rate? PLENTY of room to spread out everyone’s costumes! Our home-like amenities will add all the more comfort to your stay. We understand that Comic Con can be a bit pricey, so with your own kitchen, you’ll have the option of cooking meals in your condo instead of worrying about where to eat out in town all the time. The Comic Con hotel rush can be a bit maddening, so why not consider staying in a vacation rental? Our rental apartments are located in downtown San Diego just a short driving (or even walking) distance from the Convention Center and other venues like Petco Park. Convenient public transportation options can also get you where you need to be in no time!

What is San Diego Comic Con?

San Diego Comic-Con International (or simply SDCC) is a four day entertainment and comic convention that’s been held annually in America’s Finest City since 1970. With around 167,000 attendees just last year, SDCC is easily the largest convention held in all of San Diego. This year, the convention will take place on July 21st to July 24th.

This event is SO enormous and so popular that the San Diego Convention Center is regularly packed to capacity, which means events get moved to other locations including the Gaslamp Quarter, Hilton San Diego, Petco Park, Westfield Horton Plaza, and more. Basically, SDCC truly does take over the whole city. Expect to see attendees wandering around in costumes of all sorts. Even if you’re not part of the event, it’s incredible people watching.

What to expect in 2016? At the moment, we’re not entirely sure- but it’s going to be awesome! According to the Comic-Con.org website, the OFFICIAL Comic Con schedule won’t be released until 2 weeks before the event. There’s still plenty of time for last minute fun (or last minute celebrity guests) to be added to the mix. Numerous comic artists and film writers have already made a commitment to appear.

Of course, the vendor’s hall at SDCC truly can’t be beat. It is the shopping mall of your nerdy dreams. Hundreds of vendors will gather to sell art, posters, comic books, clothing, costumes, gaming paraphernalia, and countless other fan products.

Comic Con wouldn’t be complete without a huge emphasis on cosplay. Cosplay (or costume play) has grown to be one of the highlights of all comic related conventions. Watch or even participate in the 43rd annual costume masquerade. If you’re brave enough to strut your stuff on stage in front of a panel of judges, you might just win a cash prize!

Ready to go? We’d love to help you book your SDCC vacation rental. Skip the crowded hotel experience and stay in a comfortable downtown San Diego vacation home. Our Newest Downtown San Diego Vacation Rentals

Today, we’re proud to announce that we have just opened eight new two-bedroom, two-bathroom condos near the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego!

Since first opening vacation rentals in San Diego in late 2015, America’s Finest City has quickly become one of our most popular destinations at Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals. With so many exciting San Diego events on the horizon (including the amazing San Diego Comic Con!), we’re excited for our guests to come experience the best of the city while living like a local.

Our newest vacation rental homes are located in the Lofts at 707 Tenth building on Tenth Street between the East Village and historic Gaslamp Quarter. The vacation rentals feature all the amenities that Stay Alfred consistently delivers; including a private kitchen, living room, en suite laundry, and 24-hour customer service.

“At Stay Alfred, it’s our goal to provide our guests with access to the best downtown locations known to man,” said Jordan Allen, the owner of Stay Alfred. “We chose this location because we know that our guests will love the walkable area and the close access to the Gaslamp Quarter.”

The Gaslamp Quarter stands as San Diego’s premier nightlife paradise. Some of the city’s most interesting restaurants, bars, shops, and music venues can be found here. (Rumor has it that one of Stay Alfred’s buildings even hosts a secret speakeasy…) Of course, the Gaslamp Quarter is also a fantastic place for family fun, as well. For example, Ghirardelli has an ice cream and chocolate shop location here that we love. The Hard Rock Cafe of San Diego is always plenty of fun, too!

According to Walkscore.com, our latest property at The Lofts boasts a walk rating of 96 out of 100. The Gaslamp Quarter is only a 7 or 8-minute walk from Stay Alfred’s newest location. The upscale, modern lofts building also feature access to community amenities including a fitness center, business center, private theater screening room, sundeck, and outdoor fire pit in a community courtyard. The sundeck features a lovely view of the city. Conveniences including grocery stores, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops surround the area. Public transportation is close by, as well.

Reservation agents at Stay Alfred are now able to book these units for incoming guests. “We just opened these condos, so at this time we still have availability for San Diego Comic Con,” said reservations director, John DeRoulet. The San Diego Convention Center is an 8-minute drive or 18-minute walk away. Our latest location is perfect for a group of up to 5 guests per unit.

Stay Alfred currently hosts vacation rentals in seven different San Diego properties in numerous neighborhoods; including Little Italy, the Gaslamp Quarter, the East Village, and Cortez Hill.
Not sure where to stay in San Diego? Stay Alfred’s vacation rentals boast twice as much space as a hotel for a similar price. Why cram your family and friends into a small hotel room when you can experience one of the city’s best neighborhoods like a local? For more information about our properties, click here or give us a call any time of day at 866-232-3864 and one of our knowledgeable reservation agents will help you book the perfect condo for your travel needs.

8 Fantastic Eats in San Antonio

We’ve sampled San Antonio and found the best eats in all of Alamo City. Whether you’re looking for something unforgettably gourmet or fantastic yet affordable, we’ve got you covered. If there’s one thing we’ve learned about San Antonio at Stay Alfred, it’s that the incredible culture here definitely shows in the local cuisine!

HIGH END CHOICES
Bliss: This New American style restaurant truly lives up to its name. With a romantic, twinkling ambience and friendly service, Bliss is a San Antonio favorite for a special date night out. Must try: Oyster sliders or shrimp risotto. 926 South Presa Street

Wildfish Seafood Grille: Wildfish Seafood Grille arguably has the best seafood in San Antonio, and a decent steak (or surf and turf style dish) if seafood isn’t really your thing. Must try: Chilean Sea Bass or the crispy crab cakes. 1834 North Loop 1604 West

Mixtli: Mixtli is the brainchild of two Mexican chefs and one boxcar. Every night, they serve only 12 guests at 7PM sharp. The menu changes every 45 days to reflect the history of a different region of Mexico. Expect very interesting and visually appealing offerings unlike anything you have ever eaten. An unforgettable experience for $95 per person. Must try: Try to get a reservation! 5251 McCullough Avenue

Restaurant Gwendolyn: James Beard Award-Winning chef Michael Sohocki has truly created one of San Antonio’s major dining gems. The concept of Cafe Gwendolyn is zero electricity- the chefs only prepare food in ways that could be done before the year 1850. Expect sustainable, fresh, and organic New American delights. Must try: The menu changes every single night, but you won’t be disappointed. 152 East Pecan Street Suite #100

Mi Tierra is a bit of a tourist trap, but we love it. Photo by: Mathieu Ploude via Wikipedia Commons

MORE AFFORDABLE
Dough Pizzeria: Incredible yet affordable pizza awaits you at Dough Pizzeria Napoletana. Guy Fieri from the Food Network even called it “the real deal”. Must try: Burrata sampler. 6989 Blanco Road

Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia (Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery): Fun fact, this spot was once featured on an opening episode of The Bachelor. It’s an obvious San Antonio tourist hot spot, but maybe that’s why we love it so much. Simply delicious Mexican eats and desserts in a fun, upbeat environment with CRAZY colorful decor. Must try: Deep fried ice cream. 218 Produce Row

Leon Valley Cafe: Reservations recommended. With glowing Yelp reviews (some of the best in the entire city), you’ll be surprised at just how small this loveable cafe is. Friendly service and simply delicious brunch, lunch, and dinner. Must try: Huevos Rancheros OR The Hangover Breakfast. 6526 Bandera Road

Cured: When Chef Steve McHugh was cured from lymphoma cancer in 2013, he opened one of San Antonio’s hottest charcuterie restaurants as a celebration of his victory. Naturally, the restaurant serves a wide variety of meats that are cured in-house from 30 days to 12 months-truly a carnivore’s dream. Don’t miss out on the excellent craft cocktails, as well. Must try: Charcuterie plate. 306 Pearl Parkway Suite #101

Stay Alfred Introduces Express Check-In

At Stay Alfred, we’re constantly turning travel assumptions upside down.

We’re committed to becoming the best and most trusted vacation rental company in the United States, and in order to do that, we are always innovating and finding new ways to better serve the needs and desires of our guests.

For the optimal convenience of our guests, we’re proud to introduce Express Check-In to the world of travel accommodations.

Most hotels offer express check-out where guests can leave the keys behind in their room and then feel free to hit the road. However, Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals is the first vacation home company to offer Express Check-In. Some hotels offer a type of express room entry to guests, but it’s usually part of an exclusive loyalty program and guests still have to receive their keys from the front desk in the hotel lobby. When you stay with Stay Alfred, you’re guaranteed to receive the quickest and most convenient check-in possible no matter how many times you have booked with us. No loyalty program is needed. Even first-time guests can have the VIP experience of a completely independent and hassle-free vacation rental entry.

Almost all of our vacation rental locations have a check-in process that puts hotels to shame. It’s different than any other sort of check-in available in the travel industry right now. It’s faster because it allows you to enter your vacation rental at your own pace instead of waiting for a concierge or standing in line. You won’t have to provide anyone with your driver’s license or credit card. You don’t have to talk to anyone or explain any details about your stay. You don’t even have to pick up your keys from a front desk. After a long day of traveling to your destination, we understand that you just want to check into your room, stretch out, and relax. With Express Check-In, Stay Alfred gives you the freedom to let yourself in. After all, we’re committed to giving you the experience of feeling right at home in your condo.

When you book with Stay Alfred, we’ll send you an email before your stay containing detailed instructions on how to enter your vacation home via Express Check-In. If anything at all is unclear to you, our helpful customer care agents can be reached 24/7 via phone, text, or email to provide you with any sort of assistance you might need. It’s that simple.

Stay Alfred’s introduction of Express Check-In is just one example of how we’re leading the industry by adopting new technologies and challenging outdated assumptions about how travel should be.

If you’re looking to book accommodations with the greatest possible amount of privacy, convenience, and value, Stay Alfred would love to help you find the perfect vacation rental. We always say, “Why cram your friends and family into a 300 square foot hotel room when you can book a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment for a comparable rate?” Give us a call any time of day at 866-232-3864 to speak to one of our helpful reservation agents.

It’s Portland Pizza Week!

At Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals, we’re just as crazy about pizza as you are! This week (April 18th through 24th), Portland is celebrating Pizza Week, so we thought it would be a great time to introduce our guests to some of our favorite pizza joints in the city. Most of these are even offering up $2 specialty slices the whole week. Stop by, grab a bite, and perhaps enjoy one of Portland’s delicious brews while you’re at it.

Via PortlandMercury.com

Baby Doll Pizza: A family favorite of locals. Eat in, take out, or delivery are convenient options for you. here. If you’re looking for efficient pizza that’s still revered for tastiness, this place might just be perfect for you. Gluten free options are available, as well. For Pizza Week, try “The Gavone”- a cheesy slice topped with deep fried chicken, basil, and penne pasta. 2835 SE Stark Street, (503)459-4450

Mississippi Pizza Pub: Not only a great pizza place, but a vivacious community spot, as well. At night, the connecting lounge and venue gets packed for live music, belly-dancing, trivia, and more. Vegan, gluten-free options, and a fantastic beer bar await you at this location, as well. Pizza week offering: Vegan Buddha Pesto with spinach, garlic cloves, white mushrooms, and red peppers. So delicious, even non-Vegans will be impressed. 3552 N. Mississippi Avenue, (503)288-3231

Ken’s Artisan Pizza: Though not participating this time around for Portland Pizza Week, this crafty restaurant still deserves a spot on our list. Ken’s serves up wood-fired pizza at its best. The second you bite into a slice of a classic (like margherita or salami pizza), you’ll be impressed by just how delectable the crust is despite the simple recipe. Not only is the pizza fantastic here, but the salads and sides will win you over, as well. 304 SE 28th Avenue, (503)517-9951

An Art Lover’s Guide to Philadelphia

If you find yourself visiting Philadelphia at some point, you’re guaranteed to be taken aback by just how beautiful the city is. As one of our country’s oldest cities, Philadelphia boasts both gorgeous historical buildings and captivating public art at every turn. Philadelphia also is home to a thriving modern arts scene, as well. With spring in the air and summer just around the corner, why not take a day to enjoy an art walk or gallery showing? You’ll have a chance to experience the unique culture of the city that both tourists and locals enjoy.

Here are some of the best art related attractions and tours that The City of Brotherly Love has to offer:

One of the many murals of Old Town, Philadelphia. Photo by Robert Cudmore via Flickr

Philadelphia Mural Arts Program: Need proof that Philadelphia is truly an artistic metropolis? Old Town Philadelphia hosts the world’s largest collection of outdoor public art AND offers a number of unique tours to showcase it. Hundreds of eclectic murals span the landmarks of Old Town. You’ll see portraits, abstract art, comic art, landscapes, historic event inspired art, and more. How you would like to take the tour is up to you. Private walking tour with guided information? They have those. Trolley tour? Check. Segway? You bet! There’s even a “love letter” tour geared toward visiting the 50 romantic themed murals in the city. (Hint: Perfect for impressing your date on Valentine’s Day or any other time of the year.)

Philadelphia Museum of Art, photo by Krscal via Wikipedia

Philadelphia Museum of Art: With Greek-revival architecture based off of the Parthenon, it’s fitting that this museum houses an impressive collection of historical masterpieces. As the 3rd largest art museum in the USA, Philly’s art museum boasts a number of enviable paintings including Claude Monet’s iconic 1899 “Japanese Bridge and Water Lilies”. Insider tip: The first Sunday of every month and Wednesdays after 5PM are “pay as you wish” for admission. Otherwise, $20 admission during other times.

The Barnes Foundation, Photo by Smallbones via Wikipedia

The Barnes Foundation: At this uniquely crafted museum, you’ll witness the stunning art collection of the eccentric late Dr. Albert Barnes. The amount of classic paintings is so vast that you’ll be amazed that just one person housed so much history. Think Van Gogh, Cezanne, Matisse, and the world’s largest collection of Renoir. Definitely plan to spend a day here and buy tickets in advance.

Philadelphia Magic Gardens, Photo by Alex Thomson via Flickr

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens: Looking for an art experience that’s a bit more off-beat than the organized gallery? Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens is mosaic “art environment”, not just an art museum. Numerous tours and fun events are held here including happy hour!

First Friday: On the first Friday of every month, Old City in Philadelphia welcomes all art lovers to wander around and enjoy the neighborhood’s 40+ art galleries. Most are open from 5pm to 9pm! Of course, plenty of fantastic dining and nightlife also will await you in this area. Perfect for a fun night out with your date.

5 Spots to Swing by in the French Quarter

Since opening our vacation rentals near the French Quarter in New Orleans, there’s been no doubt that NOLA has become one of Stay Alfred’s most popular cities. With so many exciting attractions and cultural musings, it’s no wonder why guests from all over the world flock to this legendary Southern oasis. As the oldest neighborhood in the city, the French Quarter has been the epicenter of numerous cultural shifts that make NOLA the special place it is today. From the birth of Jazz music, to the popularity of Mardi Gras culture on Bourbon Street, The French Quarter has spots where you can truly feel the vibe of The Big Easy.

The Beauty of the French Quarter, Photo by: llambrano via Pixabay

Spotted Cat Music Club: As you might have heard before, New Orleans is commonly referred to as the birthplace of Jazz music. Even if you’re not a huge jazz fan, it’s worth it to swing by this beloved music venue for an early evening performance. By the time it gets dark out, this small venue becomes packed with locals and tourists alike.

Fleurty Girl: Even if you can’t stand gift shops, you might just like this one. Have a friend or family member that is difficult to buy for? Numerous goods with specifically NOLA sense of humor await you at this favorite French Quarter gift boutique. The “inside joke” items are so popular that even locals shop here. Even though the store is called Fleurty GIRL, there are still many gifts available for men, as well.

Fresh Louisiana Crab Claw at Coop’s Place, Photo by: City Foodsters via Flickr

Coop’s Place: There might be a line at this hot spot- but it’s not only the tourists. Locals and tourists alike frequent this spot for unbeatable Cajun and Creole eats. Whether you’re more into red meat or seafood, there’s plenty of options available for you at this NOLA gem. Recommended: Fresh Lousiana marinated crab claw with coleslaw

Famous beignets and coffee at Cafe du Monde, Photo by: Leigh Klotz via Flickr

Cafe Du Monde: This one is a must for those who visit the French Quarter. Yes, the clientele is unashamedly touristy, but the bites are incredible and worth the inevitably long line. Not sure what to order? The classic beignets and chicory-flavored coffee, of course. Tired of standing in line? See if there’s inside seating available (as most people don’t even know about it). If all else fails, Cafe Beignet nearby is arguably just as good.

Old Absinthe House on Bourbon Street, Photo by: Jason Persse via Flickr

Old Absinthe House: While there are more iconic bars to visit in the French Quarter, the Old Absinthe House on Bourbon Street definitely boasts an interesting menu and rich history. Back in the day, Andrew Jackson planned a battle with British Forces in this very bar. Sometime later, a delectable drink called the Absinthe Frappe was born. Despite the fantastic drinks, this bar is definitely nothing fancy. Make of it what you will!

Not sure where to stay in New Orleans? Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals has numerous locations that will let you stay close to all the action, but far away enough to enjoy a quiet night’s sleep. With one bedroom and two bedroom options, why cram your family into a small hotel room when you can stay together in an apartment for a comparable price?
Check out our properties on this page or call our toll-free number at 866-232-3864 anytime to speak to one of our helpful reservation agents. We would love to help you book the perfect trip to NOLA!

Stay Alfred’s Guide to Patriots’ Day

Join us for this all American holiday in Boston!

On April 18th, Boston will be in a flurry of excitement over Patriots’ Day, a statewide holiday commemorating the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord.

For those who don’t quite remember their U.S. history, the Battles of Lexington and Concord (fought on April 19th, 1775) started the Revolutionary War that led to American independence from Great Britain.

Held on the third Monday of every April, Patriots’ Day is celebrated with historical reenactments, museum events, parades, and the world-famous Boston Marathon. Patriots’ Day is a big deal- in Massachusetts and Maine, most state, county, and municipal offices are closed to celebrate this holiday that stands in honor of those who helped make our country the independent nation that it is today.

Reenactments: Want to see a live action performance of what the “shot heard ‘round the world” might have looked like? Every year, thousands of onlookers gather to the town of Lexington to view a reenactment of the first shots of the Revolutionary War. This year, this exciting event will take place on April 18th on the Lexington Green of Minute Men National Park. Hundreds of actors in historically accurate costumes will be battling it out just like back in 1775- you’ll forget for a moment that it’s 2016.

Sports: Some of the world’s most passionate and elite runners will gather at the Boston Marathon on April 18th to challenge themselves on this legendary 26 mile long route that covers both city and difficult terrain. While skilled athletes will finish the race in a few hours, those who join for the fun of it will take a more casual pace. Despite the tragic bombings that occurred almost three years ago in 2013, Boston’s pride and spirit for this traditional event is stronger than ever.

Fenway Park, Photo by Werner Kunz via Flickr

On the same day, the traditional Patriots’ Day Boston Red Sox home game will be drawing a crowd at Fenway Park. This year, The Red Sox will be up against the Toronto Blue Jays. Near Boylston Street around Fenway Park, you’ll be able to see runners crossing the Boston Marathon finish line.

Patriots’ Day Parade, Photo by S Pakhrin via Wikipedia

Parties & Parades, Patriot Style: Two different parades will take place on Monday, April 18th- one in Lexington, and one in Concord. At Lexington, the 2.5 mile parade will start at City Hall. At Concord, the parade will start at North Bridge and feature both British and American actors. A special North Bridge musket salute to honor fallen soldiers will take place around 8:30 to 9:30 AM.

Patriot’s Day in Boston isn’t just celebrated with traditional events. Even if none of the history or sports related events suit your fancy, there are numerous other ways to enjoy this unique holiday. Many folks enjoy watching the view of the Boston Marathon from a bar located along the marathon path.

Not sure where to stay during all of the excitement?

Guest Review: Allie’s Trip to Washington, D.C.

I’ve always been a history nerd. In high school, I took advanced placement United States history for fun. Needless to say, I was beyond excited when my family suggested visiting Washington, D.C. for spring break vacation. After all, my sister attends college nearby on the East Coast.

Vacations sound like a blast until you start actually trying to plan them. For hours and hours, my mom and I surfed the internet like crazy, looking for decently priced accommodations in downtown DC. We ran into some appalling finds- people’s sketchy basements on AirBnb, over-priced hotels with nasty reviews galore, and numerous other hotels that didn’t even have queen size beds available. We were starting to think that planning this trip only a month and a half in advance was an epic fail.

Eventually, we ran into a vacation rentals company called “Stay Alfred”. The whole setup looked almost too good to be true- a two bedroom apartment with a king and queen size bed in downtown DC. Their Trip Advisor page seemed to have good reviews. Slightly skeptical, we called and asked them about our travel dates.

A helpful reservation expert named Kyle told us that Stay Alfred’s properties in DC had been booking fast, but he had room for us if we were willing to move to another unit after three days. Figuring that a change of scenery wouldn’t be a bad idea, we booked a 3 night stay at Mass Court and another 3 night stay at Thomas Circle. Even with the unit change, our stay came out to about the same price or less than most of the DC hotels we had seen online. (In retrospect, I can’t believe that my mom and I ALMOST booked a hotel with only one room for about 200 dollars more than Stay Alfred.)

Mass Court (left) and Thomas Circle (right)

Let the vacation planning commence! Judging by the locations of the rentals we were staying in, nearly all the sights we were aiming to see in DC were pretty close by. My family decided that we would love to visit the National Mall, the White House, ALL the monuments, Arlington National Cemetery, Georgetown, Mount Vernon, and of course, the Smithsonian Museums. Since we were going to be staying downtown, we knew that we wouldn’t have to worry too much about finding restaurants or bars to pop into for a bite to eat. I was excited to see that Mass Court was even right near Chinatown!

Mass Court: We were half-way dead and tired of air travel by the time we arrived at our first rental. However, it was incredibly easy to check in. When we opened the door and turned on the light on in the apartment, we were amazed by how identical our unit looked to the online photos. Spotless, clean, and very modern. The apartment was incredibly spacious, and mom and dad were able to sleep upstairs in a king size bed while my sister and I took the queen size bed downstairs. Everyone had plenty of room to spread out all their belongings, and having two bathrooms was perfect. Not far down Massachusetts Avenue we were able to find a Wal-Mart to buy some groceries. Because we had a full kitchen in the unit, we were able to make ourselves a nice breakfast every day instead of spending more money in town. I can’t remember what floor, but upstairs there is both a gorgeous rooftop deck and pool with a hot tub. From both amenities, you can see a view of the Washington Monument glowing in the distance. There was a bit of construction and city noise outside, but I didn’t find it to be bothersome.

Night time view from the rooftop deck at Mass Court

During our time at Mass Court, sight-seeing was incredibly convenient! While my family preferred to take taxis, we also were able to walk to Union Station to check out other transportation options such as tour buses or the Metro Rail. Since we had a rental car, we also drove down to Mount Vernon and Alexandria. The day after that, we took a taxi (right outside of our apartment) to Arlington National Cemetery and then walked the National Mall area to explore all of the capitol’s best monuments and the White House. We also spent a day exploring the wide variety of Smithsonian Museums. My family tends to freak out about getting lost, but navigating Washington, D.C. was incredibly simple as long as we looked at a map or asked a friendly local for directions.

Thomas Circle: Moving from the Mass Court into Thomas Circle turned out not to be a big deal at all. The staff at Thomas Circle was incredibly friendly, and we were also able to call Stay Alfred’s customer service line when we had a question about our check-in. While this unit wasn’t a 2 story loft like Mass Court, it was also beautiful, clean and identical to the photos online. Also, plenty of space! If you go to the 2nd floor near the business lounge, there’s even free coffee and tea out in the morning. My family liked this unit a bit more because the surrounding Logan Circle neighborhood was very quiet and full of interesting old churches. We stepped into one of the churches out of curiosity and witnessed a beautiful organ performance.

While staying at Thomas Circle, we took time to visit the Holocaust Memorial Museum and Georgetown. We also went back to the Smithsonian because there is an overwhelming amount of museums to see. One day, we even walked around the Logan Circle area and checked out some nearby stores. My sister and I loved a local used-clothing boutique called Buffalo Exchange.

Overall, I couldn’t imagine that staying in a hotel would have given us the same comfort as our vacation rental. I think it’s normal for a bit of stress to arise during vacations, so it was PERFECT to have an abundance room and space for everyone in my family. I’ve stayed with my family in hotels where we only had 1 bathroom, and it would take us FOREVER to get ready in the morning. If you’re looking for twice the space of a hotel, Stay Alfred is the way to go. A trip to see all the sights in Washington, D.C. looked pretty intimidating at first, but I found that DC is not a difficult city to get around in as long as you stay somewhere downtown and hop on Google Maps for directions.

Simply put, Stay Alfred was a great choice for DC, and I highly recommend that others go witness the legendary monuments in our incredible capital.

Pinnacle on the Park: Located in the East Village, the newly built Pinnacle on the Park stands as the highest residential building in downtown San Diego. It’s truly a pinnacle of modern architecture! Panoramic city views (or even some views of The Bay) will surround you in your rental. The Pinnacle on the Park is easily one Stay Alfred’s most modern properties, with amenities that are fit for a king. The Pinnacle has a 24 hour community gym, lap pool, spa, underground parking lot, residential lounge, and community clubhouse with a gourmet demonstration kitchen. True to name, this property is also located alongside Faultline Park. Near the Pinnacle, you’ll find a convenient bar and coffeeshop called Halcyon.

The recently revitalized East Village has undergone many changes and developments in the past couple of years. Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, attracts baseball friends and event attendees from all over. On game day, cheers can be heard from the numerous bars and restaurants surrounding the area. The East Village is also only a 15 minute stroll from the gorgeous and exciting Gaslamp Quarter, which has often been a favorite of our guests.

The Heritage vacation rental

The Heritage: Our latest property, The Heritage, is centrally located near the best of San Diego’s attractions. Despite being in the middle of it all, residents of the Cortez Hill area describe the neighborhood as quiet in comparison to other parts of the city. At The Heritage, you’ll find a cardio fitness center, landscaped courtyards, outdoor grills, eating areas, as well as a heated pool with two spas. Everything that you need for a comfortable stay is right here!

San Diego International Airport is also only 10 minutes away, as well. Balboa Park is known as being one of the “must see” attractions for visitors of San Diego. The possibilities for family fun are endless in Balboa Park, as this oasis is home to the San Diego Zoo, over 30 different museums and botanical gardens, and numerous recreational areas for activities like hiking, biking, golf, tennis, archery, and dancing. Beale Street

One of the main draws of Memphis is the energy, music, and food of Beale Street. We’re not sure if this place smells more like beer or BBQ. Visitors often refer to this beloved destination as “Baby Bourbon Street” due to the similar lively bar hopping and interesting shopping vibe of the iconic place in New Orleans. If live music is your thing, Beale Street is the place to be! One of our favorite spots on Beale Street for appetizers, beer, and live music is coincidentally named Alfred’s! Other classic Beale Street hot spots worth checking out are B.B. King’s Blues Club, Wet Willie’s, and Gus’s World Famous Hot & Spicy Chicken. Want to start a friendly argument between locals? Beale Street might be only a 15 minute stroll away, but the Memphis trolley or bus routes are available right near your rental to take you anywhere you want to travel. Memphis is full of off-beat attractions and surprises. Have you ever heard of the Memphis Pyramid? If you’re interested in visiting one of the world’s largest hunting and fishing stores in the world, you might want to make your way over to this not-so-hidden gem. When you’ve completed your tackle box shopping, you can enjoy the restaurants, bowling alley, archery range, observation deck, and aquarium that also draws crowds to this remarkable megastore. (Yes, Memphians think this place is weird, too.)

A trip to Memphis isn’t complete without a visit to the home of The King. At Graceland, you’ll be able to tour and marvel over Elvis’ 14 acre estate. Visitors are invited to explore Elvis’ mansion, trophy room, automobile museum, and final resting place in the Meditation Garden.
