City of Seafood: Best Sushi Spots in Seattle

From the famous fish tosses of Pike Place Market to the Ballard locks salmon ladder, Seattle’s distinct seafood culture is part of what makes this city so special. Naturally, Seattle is one of Stay Alfred’s favorite cities to sample sushi. After asking my sushi-obsessed office what restaurants in Seattle were the best, these were the top contenders. Sushi Kashiba: Shiro Kashiba is Seattle’s own master sushi chef. Kashiba, an apprentice to famed world’s best sushi chef Jiro Ono from “Jiro Dreams of Sushi”, has delighted sushi snobs everywhere by opening his latest restaurant in Pike Place in late 2015. Sushi Kashiba might have a high price tag, but it doesn’t disappoint. Incredibly fresh fish is paired with other interesting seafood elements to create sushi as it is supposed to be savored. You’ll be graced with attentive service and helpful presentations on what you are eating. 86 Pine Street #1, (206)441-8844

Shiro’s: Chef Kashiba also opened this 11 seat restaurant in Belltown in 1994. Though Kashiba has since moved on to work at Sushi Kashiba, the excellence of this Spartan-simple yet iconic restaurant still lives on through lead chef Jun Takai. Expect incredibly fresh seafood and traditional Japanese fare at its finest. 2401 2nd Avenue, (206)443-9844

Mashiko Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar: We’re not letting Shiro Kashiba’s restaurants steal all the attention. Mashiko is another high-end sushi spot in town with an enthusiastic fan base and rave reviews. What makes Mashiko special? It is Seattle’s first 100% sustainable sushi restaurant. The chef knows where every single piece of piece of seafood is coming from and prepares it with delicate care. A perfect place for special occasions. 4725 California Avenue SW, (206)935-4339

Japonessa Sushi Cocina: Looking for a more unique sushi experience? Japonessa combines Spanish flavors and flair to sushi without compromising the taste of quality cut fish. Despite the non-traditional sushi preparation methods, Japonessa is a favorite of Seattleites. Momiji: With a serene, Japanese decorated interior and delicious fish cuts, Momiji has become a popular choice for sushi that’s a bit more affordable than some of the more high-end spots in town. With friendly service, a pleasant atmosphere, and a great drink menu, Momiji allows you the full Seattle sushi experience without the sushi-snob vibe. 1522 12th Avenue, (206)457-4068

Tsukushinbo: Don’t forget about this spot just because the name might be a bit difficult to say! If you’re looking for a wide selection of both sushi and other Japanese delights in a friendly atmosphere, this slightly hidden spot in the International District might be the perfect place for you. 515 South Main Street, (206)467-4004

Umi Sake House: This popular, bustling Belltown spot is known for both delectable sushi and a well-loved happy hour. While traditional sushi restaurants are more quiet, serene, and simple, Umi’s large, club-like interior and extended drink menu is perfect for a fun night out. 2230 1st Avenue, (206)374-8717

Hidden Gem!
Wataru: This totally unassuming restaurant hasn’t caught the public eye quite yet in Seattle. Tucked away on the main street in the Ravenna neighborhood, Wataru is truly a small but pleasant surprise. Chef Kotaro Kumita (who apprenticed under Shiro Kashiba, of course) only accepts 6 diners at the bar at a time where you can watch as he single-handedly creates sushi for everyone in the restaurant. The whole restaurant only seats 24. With Chef Kumita being the sole chef in this restaurant, don’t come here expecting a rapid dining experience. Our Newest Downtown San Diego Vacation Rentals

Today, we’re proud to announce that we have just opened eight new two-bedroom, two-bathroom condos near the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego!

Since first opening vacation rentals in San Diego in late 2015, America’s Finest City has quickly become one of our most popular destinations at Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals. With so many exciting San Diego events on the horizon (including the amazing San Diego Comic Con!), we’re excited for our guests to come experience the best of the city while living like a local.

Our newest vacation rental homes are located in the Lofts at 707 Tenth building on Tenth Street between the East Village and historic Gaslamp Quarter. The vacation rentals feature all the amenities that Stay Alfred consistently delivers; including a private kitchen, living room, en suite laundry, and 24-hour customer service.

“At Stay Alfred, it’s our goal to provide our guests with access to the best downtown locations known to man,” said Jordan Allen, the owner of Stay Alfred. “We chose this location because we know that our guests will love the walkable area and the close access to the Gaslamp Quarter.”

The Gaslamp Quarter stands as San Diego’s premier nightlife paradise. Some of the city’s most interesting restaurants, bars, shops, and music venues can be found here. (Rumor has it that one of Stay Alfred’s buildings even hosts a secret speakeasy…) Of course, the Gaslamp Quarter is also a fantastic place for family fun, as well. For example, Ghirardelli has an ice cream and chocolate shop location here that we love. The Hard Rock Cafe of San Diego is always plenty of fun, too!

According to Walkscore.com, our latest property at The Lofts boasts a walk rating of 96 out of 100. The Gaslamp Quarter is only a 7 or 8-minute walk from Stay Alfred’s newest location. The upscale, modern lofts building also feature access to community amenities including a fitness center, business center, private theater screening room, sundeck, and outdoor fire pit in a community courtyard. The sundeck features a lovely view of the city. Conveniences including grocery stores, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops surround the area. Public transportation is close by, as well.

Reservation agents at Stay Alfred are now able to book these units for incoming guests. “We just opened these condos, so at this time we still have availability for San Diego Comic Con,” said reservations director, John DeRoulet. Philadelphia Mural Arts Program: Need proof that Philadelphia is truly an artistic metropolis? Old Town Philadelphia hosts the world’s largest collection of outdoor public art AND offers a number of unique tours to showcase it. Hundreds of eclectic murals span the landmarks of Old Town. You’ll see portraits, abstract art, comic art, landscapes, historic event inspired art, and more. How you would like to take the tour is up to you. Private walking tour with guided information? They have those. Trolley tour? Check. Segway? You bet! There’s even a “love letter” tour geared toward visiting the 50 romantic themed murals in the city. (Hint: Perfect for impressing your date on Valentine’s Day or any other time of the year.)

Philadelphia Museum of Art: With Greek-revival architecture based off of the Parthenon, it’s fitting that this museum houses an impressive collection of historical masterpieces. As the 3rd largest art museum in the USA, Philly’s art museum boasts a number of enviable paintings including Claude Monet’s iconic 1899 “Japanese Bridge and Water Lilies”. Insider tip: The first Sunday of every month and Wednesdays after 5PM are “pay as you wish” for admission. Otherwise, $20 admission during other times.

The Barnes Foundation: At this uniquely crafted museum, you’ll witness the stunning art collection of the eccentric late Dr. Albert Barnes. The amount of classic paintings is so vast that you’ll be amazed that just one person housed so much history. Think Van Gogh, Cezanne, Matisse, and the world’s largest collection of Renoir. Definitely plan to spend a day here and buy tickets in advance.

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens: Looking for an art experience that’s a bit more off-beat than the organized gallery? Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens is mosaic “art environment”, not just an art museum. Numerous tours and fun events are held here including happy hour!

First Friday: On the first Friday of every month, Old City in Philadelphia welcomes all art lovers to wander around and enjoy the neighborhood’s 40+ art galleries. Most are open from 5pm to 9pm! Of course, plenty of fantastic dining and nightlife also will await you in this area. Perfect for a fun night out with your date.

When Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals decided to open vacation homes in one of America’s oldest cities, we knew that many unique cultural adventures were in store for our guests. From the distinctive accents of the locals to the legendary historic attractions, what’s not to love? Here’s 10 reasons why we are always excited about Boston:

The Beauty: Have you ever seen Boston in the fall? The city is beautiful during all seasons, but Boston’s fall is so remarkable that there are specific tours designed for visitors to come see the colorful fall foliage. Boston maintains such natural beauty by making sure the city is kept spotlessly clean. While the roads in Boston might be a bit confusing, they’re practically clean enough to eat off of. Check out this time lapse of Boston’s stellar views.
The Architecture: It wasn’t difficult to find gorgeous buildings for our vacation rentals, here. Boston’s landscape is flecked with both the old and new- glittering high-rises, industrial brick buildings, and (my favorite) charming old churches. Be sure to visit the colonial Old State House that is quaintly tucked away downtown and surrounded by four skyscrapers. (Pictured right)
The Sports: Win or lose, Bostonians will always defend their teams. From the beloved Red Sox to the Celtics, sports are a big deal here. Even if you’re not interested in local sports, the fandom can be highly entertaining as you bar hop on a game night.
The Food Scene: Even though Boston’s old-timey nickname is “Beantown”, Boston style baked beans aren’t such a big deal anymore. (Pro tip, you’ll be an obvious tourist if you say Beantown.) Thankfully, Boston has many other classics to keep your mouth watering. If pizza is what you’re after, Boston has many celebrated pizza styles and restaurants to keep you busy. Egg in a Jar, Samuel Adams beer, Boston Cream Pie, canolis, clam “chowdah”, and “lobstah” rolls are other favorites that define the local tastes. Want to visit one of the oldest restaurants in the United States? Union Oyster House has been serving since 1826.
The Festivities: Boston might not be the largest city, but there’s always something going on here. Beach parties? Boat shows? Science fiction film fests? Boston Massacre Re-enactments? It’s all here. And of course, don’t forget about the Boston Marathon. No excuses to be bored.
The Art: Boston is riddled with not only unique historical statues, but also plenty of museums and art events to keep the inner cognoscente in all of us interested. The Institute of Contemporary Art (or ICA) is worth a visit just to check out the iconic architecture. Are you more of a theater fan? Boston’s theater scene is thriving.
The Various Districts: Boston’s walk-ability is top notch, so wandering from neighborhood to neighborhood can be a fun way to explore the city’s excitement. Check out Beacon Hill and Back Bay to view buildings of the traditional Federalist style. Pop by Chinatown (near the theater district) to walk down a colorful street of numerous Asian food choices.
The History: If it isn’t obvious enough through the architecture, statues, and interesting road layout, Boston is full of historical significance that comes with being such an old city. Remember Paul Revere? His famous ride was brought on by a signal from the Old North Church in 1775, which still stands today. The Boston Tea Party ships are still here, as well. You’ll be viewing places that were key points in the Revolutionary War and our country’s independence from England. Take a walk along the legendary 2.5 mile long Freedom Trail and you’ll hit a lot of these spots. Also, Faneuil Hall (one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, now) has been an operating festival and marketplace spot since 1743.
The Culture: If you haven’t heard the jokes, you’ll quickly learn that Boston has one of the most distinctive accents in the United States. However, besides the accents, Boston generally has a welcoming culture towards visitors. With one of the lowest divorce rates in our country, Boston prides itself on being a city that highly values loyalty. (Just think of all the times they still cheer on their teams that have lost…)

If you’ve never heard of Johnny Cupcakes, that’s understandable. The company spends literally no money on traditional advertising. Zero. 1. Make everything an experience. Johnny knows that people thrive of off new experiences. Everything from his faux-bakery stores to the highly unusual packaging is designed to make every customer feel like it’s their birthday. He’ll even put handwritten notes and small gifts inside of people’s orders. Some people are put off by his company’s prankster ethos but they still relate the experience to others, building brand exposure.

2. Reinvest in your business. This might seem obvious but it’s especially important for new business owners. Johnny learned this lesson at a young age; he started 16 businesses before he was 16 years old. Everything he made, from lemonade stands to selling candy to classmates, went back into funding his next endeavor. He forewent video games, girlfriends, and partying to focus on his businesses and now Johnny Cupcakes is the culmination of years of discipline and sacrifice.

3. Focus on what makes you unique. There are so many choices for customers today, you need to show them why they should take a risk on you. Your company should have a personality. Your website, business cards, and even your mascot should be extensions of that personality. Johnny puts special emphasis on having a great website. First impressions are the most important and your website is usually the first thing people look at.

4. Pay attention to the details. One of the hallmarks of Johnny Cupcakes is the custom-made, often hilarious packaging the product comes in: pastry boxes, ice cream cartons, Chinese food containers, VHS boxes and more, all emblazoned with catchy slogans and fake nutritional facts. Good packaging does not get thrown away, people save it and show their friends, turning what would normally be trash into mini-billboards and customers into promoters. Additionally, if people see you putting that much effort into something as small as packaging, they will trust you more when it comes to the important things.

5. Do more of what you love. “I just like to make funny shirts and trick people,” says Earle. Of course the same can’t be said for everybody, but if you can find a way to inject passion into your work, it will pay dividends. Your customers (and employees) can tell if you care about what you do and they will support you in ways they wouldn’t if they feel you’re just going through the motions.

Staying Healthy While You Travel

Eat Right:

One of the best parts of traveling is getting to try a new city’s delicious food, but that often means eating out and consuming a lot of calorie-rich meals. When you eat healthier, you feel better (and you’ll be able to fit into your jeans when you get home).

Stay somewhere that has a kitchen. Cooking for yourself lets you choose the right foods and control your portions. It’s also an excellent way to save some money.
If you’re going to prepare your own meals, look for a local farmers’ market and pick up some healthy fruits and vegetables. Last year there were over 8,000 farmers in the US, so the odds are pretty good you can find one.
Pack some protein-rich snacks like nuts or beef jerky that you can take with you while traveling. The food in airports is notoriously unhealthy and the extra protein will satisfy those hunger cravings, making it easier to avoid temptation.
One great trick from Jennifer Cohen at Forbes: if you’re stuck in a hotel room without a kitchen, use the coffee maker in your room to make healthy breakfasts like oatmeal.

Stay Active:

Traveling often means long hours of immobility: sitting at an airport, sitting in a plane, sitting in a car. Here are a few basic tips for staying active on the road.

Make use of the facilities. Every hotel will have a fitness center, even if it’s just a NordicTrack in a storage closet. Swim some laps if the pool is big enough or just tread water if it’s not (you’ll burn upwards of 200 calories in 15 minutes).
You can also exercise in your room if there is enough space. Pack a jump rope or resistance band. These are easy to use and, most importantly for traveling, lightweight. And don’t forget about yoga.
Walk to as many places as possible. If your destination is a mile away or less, try to walk there. Take walking tours of the city. Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Jogging is also a great way to see the city and get some exercise at the same time.
Just do it. Obviously you can’t stick to your usual workout routine while you travel, but that doesn’t mean you need to forgo it completely. Even if you squeeze in just 15-20 minutes a day, its certainly better than nothing. Try waking up a half hour earlier than you need and work out before you start your day. That extra bit of activity will make all the difference.

Rest Up:
The best way to mitigate the negative effects of stress is to get get plenty of rest. Your body and mind need time to recharge for you to feel your best. Experts say you need 7-8 hours of sleep a night for optimal performance. If you have trouble falling asleep in a strange environment, try using a sleep mask. Taking time during the day to do some simple meditation exercises can also do wonders for your state of mind.

The 43rd annual Bumbershoot Festival opens in Seattle over Labor Day weekend, from Saturday 8/31 to Monday 9/2. The festival features tons of art, music, and good eats. The festival’s history began in 1971 as a city-funded event, with over 100,000 visitors. In the 1980’s, the festival was taken over by One Reel Productions and is now affiliated, and produced by AEG Live. Bumbershoot is Seattle’s most notable events and it is back to kick things off in 2013.

This year, the festival line-up includes Death Cab, MGMT, Kendrick Lamar, Crystal Castles, Gary Numan, The Breeders, Matt & Kim, Tegan & Sara, and so many more.

Denver Art Museum, Spun: Adventures in Textiles

Denver Art Museum is showcasing an exhibit at textiles from pre-Columbian weaving to Navajo blankets to an examination of clothing in art and photography. Spun also features many vivid multidimensional works created by South American artist in workshops separated by hundreds of miles and more than five centuries of history. The art museum want visitors to join in the exploration of this medium, including a drop-in Quilt studio.
